How you wash your jeans has a big impact on how they last

It’s natural for denim to lose some of its colour over time. But how you wash your jeans will have a big impact on how they look and how long they last. Below are guidelines for getting the best results. The golden rules: wash at 30°C degrees or less and never tumble dry. These two simple steps will go along way to preserving the colour and size of your jeans. For even better results, follow our machine and hand wash guides below.

HAND WASHING GUIDE

It’s easier to hand wash your jeans in a container that allows you to lay the jeans out, like a bath tub, although a sink or bucket can also work.

  • NO 1 Before you start, make sure your bath tub, sink or bucket is clean.
  • NO 2 Add enough water to completely cover the jeans – the water should be 30°C degrees or less / no more than room temperature – and mix in a small amount of gentle laundry detergent.
  • NO 3 Turn the jeans inside-out and place them in the water. Turn the jeans over a few times to make sure the denim is fully soaked.
  • NO 4 Now leave the jeans, making sure they are laid out flat and fully submerged – you might need to place something on top to hold the jeans down.  Don’t be concerned if the water changes colour – this is completely normal.
  • NO 5 After 30 minutes of soaking, fold the jeans in half so the right leg lies on top of the left leg. Then gently rollup and unroll the jeans, while keeping them submerged in water. Do this twice, then turn the jeans over and gently roll and unroll twice again.
  • NO 6 Drain the water and refill with fresh water. Submerge the jeans again, turning them over several times to rinse out any remaining detergent. Repeat if needed.
  • NO 7 Finally, remove the jeans from the water and hang dry vertically. They will continue to drip for sometime, so you may wish to hang them outside until the dripping has stopped.
  • NO 8 If you want to iron your jeans, do this once they are fully dry and while they are inside out to preserve the finish on the outside.

To keep your jeans in their best condition and to make them last longer, wash them as little as possible.

MACHINE WASHING GUIDE

To keep your jeans in their best shape, and to make them last longer, we recommend hand-washing. But you can also achieve good results from machine washing following these basic steps.

  • Always wash at 30°C degrees or less
  • Close the zip or fly and turn the jean inside-out
  • Place the jeans inside the washing machine and add a small amount of gentle laundry detergent
  • Use a gentle wash cycle and
 a medium-to-low spin speed
  • Wash with similar coloured clothes or separately, if washing for the first time
  • Hang dry, never tumble dry
  • Iron inside-out and using low heat
